Building a raingarden is an ideal and simple way to harvest rainwater.

Rain from your roof can be diverted from the down pipe into a water butt, which overflows into an above ground pond which is great for water lilies. The water then flows along a bamboo channel to a raised planter/soakaway unit which is great for growing veg. All you need are basic DIY skills to assemble the kit.

All of the components are situated above ground, so no digging is required. The pond and planter 'outers' are made from interlocking pieces of Swedish pressurised whitewood which is guaranteed for 20 years.

The ponds have a black polyliner which can be sited on hard surfaces, while the planter needs a free draining base. You can design your own raingarden from the various components since ponds and planters come in many shapes and sizes, or you can buy one of our complete kits.

Apparently, rainfall in the UK has decreased by 20% over the last five years, so if you want to beat the drought and hosepipe bans of recent years, then you could consider our drought-buster kit. This features a 1,600 litre tank, and so considering that even a small roof in London gets 5,000 gallons a year, there’s lots of rain to harvest!

The drought-buster kit comes in two halves so it will squeeze through a standard front door. To be fair, it's not the prettiest adornment to your garden, but it can be shrouded by trellis and honeysuckle. A powerful independent pump is included, so you can water your garden by either using a standard hose or add our irrigation kit so that your garden is watered automatically.

Don’t forget to add a herb-wheel. This will allow you to you water your herbs with lovely soft water, which is ideal for orchids, rhododendrons, camellias and other plants which prefer an alkaline-free soil.
